Informations on the courses

This course is characterized by the basic elements of Future Studies, and its aim is to analyze the obstacles that limit the use of the future in strategy building and decision making. Specific attention will be paid to the different levels of depth of Future Studies.

The lessons it are mainly focused on how to practice Anticipation. The concept of the "future exercises" is thoroughly explored in all its phases and components. Subsequently, the course analayzes the tools and methods of the futurist's "toolbox" . The main methods used in futures studies are presented in detail, includingDelphi, Scansione Ambientale, Analisi Causale Stratificata, Backcasting, Futures workshops, Analisi morfologica, Wild cards, Tre Orizzonti, Costruzione di scenari strategici The Workshop then teaches how to practice many of these Futures Exercises.

There are changes that have been active for a long time and are guaranteed to last a long time. They have an almost predetermined direction, and are justified by a series of quantitative and qualitative evidences. They exert formidable influences on many human activities from economics to politics, from science to social relations, so the possibility of changing a genuine megatrend is almost null. The course explores the theoretical aspects of megatrends and reconstructs the evolution of the main trends, such as the aging of populations, the increase in energy needs, the obsolescence of infrastructures, the climate crisis, etc., trying to trace their possible future developments.

In the sessions dedicated to each method, course participants can personally experience how to design and carry out a Future Exercise and then implement the results. Future exercises allow to better understand changes in the medium and long term and explore possible futures in order to "use" them to build better and more resilient strategies for the future of organizations (companies or public administrations).

Through the analysis of the concepts of "risk" and "uncertainty", the course proposes a more thorough interpretation of the typical activities of risk management, which is now an essential element of the governance of organizations. The aim of the Future Studies is to gather valuable information even on unknown risks, in areas that remain undetectable with normal risk modeling methods, and to propose forward-looking risk management solutions that are open to the transformations of the context in which organizations operate and attentive to communication, society and sustainability.

Innovation has never affected the lives of individuals and companies as much as it has in the last 20 years. However, we are often unable to fully understand the positive and negative effects that will impact our daily lives in the future. The aim of this course is to provide a broad spectrum of analytical skills to deal with these important changes.
Knowing how to map possible futures is a fundamental skill for a future professionale. Knowing how to narrate these maps and their most important implications is the skill that makes these maps usable. The second part of the course will provide knowledge on how to adapt said changes in a personal and unique way.

The European Union focuses on Strategic foresight as a relevant collateral activity to adapt EU policymaking to future needs, ensuring that short-term initiatives are grounded in a long-term perspective. The course focuses on the crucial elements of Strategic Foresight as a policy tool (managing fast-moving and unpredictable change and building cultural resilience to ensure sustainable, fair, and democratic transitions to new perspectives) to explain its mechanisms, how it is implemented, and how results are assessed from a Futures Studies perspective.

After reconstructing the birth of Future Studies, the course will analyze the main stages of development of the discipline, from the classics of the Seventies to the multiple contributions of our days. The diffusion of future themes in the modern imaginary (literature, cinema) will also be analyzed.
